We’ve all been through this. It’s the end of a long day. You want to sit back, relax and watch a movie. You begin to scroll endlessly through the thousands and thousands of titles available. Immerse yourself in “The Godfather”, “Citizen Kane” or one of the other hundreds of Hollywood classics? Or are you leaning towards a more modern, big budget superhero movie?
If you’re like me, you’re not looking for the classics, you’re looking for the best of the worst. I’m talking about bad films. The ones so bad that they are good films. The films that look like they were made by an alien who has never seen a movie before. Bottom of the barrel schlock. You know, the good stuff!
While we were creating our previous Xbox One title, Freedom fingersMyself and my lead developer, Mark Zorn, discovered that we love these cinematic outcasts, and during those long, drawn-out hours of quality assurance, we felt that those bad movies were the only thing that kept us sane.
And the only thing better than watching a bad movie is making fun of them. Add your own jokes, one-liners and running comments. If you are a fan of “Mystery Science Theater 3000”, “RiffTrax” or “Cinematic Titanic”, you are certainly no stranger to the subculture that emerged from this nocturnal pastime.
When it was time to think about our next game, the idea came up to make a party game that would be about bad movies is the game
What the hell?! is a multiplayer party game in which each player uses their own funny (or just dumb) dubs to cover up missing dialogues from incredibly terrible B-movies, pathetically outdated pressure-sensitive adhesives, and bizarre industrial films. Your dubs are then played off in a head-to-head comedy battle against those of other players. The players – together with up to 6 spectators – then vote for their favorite dub!
We also wanted players to be able to hear their funny sayings live so that all of your replacement dubs would play seamlessly in the movie clips using text-to-speech. You can even add sound effects to really sell the brilliance of your dub.
With over 300 movie clips to play with, What the hell?! takes “Bad Movie Night” and expands it into an interactive, fast-paced multiplayer game that friends and family, both from the region and from afar, can enjoy together.
What the hell?! supports up to 12 players and while local play is always ideal, we know it is not always possible. Fortunately, streaming from your Xbox One is incredibly easy, and getting connected is just a few clicks away. Speaking of simple, we wanted to make entering your dubs simple and straightforward. In the game, players can enter text, add sound effects, and vote using any browser-enabled device. No controller required.
The best part? What the hell?! is available today! We couldn’t be more excited to share it with all of you. The next time you’re on the lookout for a bad movie, get a copy of instead What the hell?!, Invite a few friends and indulge in the most spectacular failures in cinema. It’s the best and worst time money can buy.
