The design and functions of the Apple Watch make it a unique device, today known mainly for its applications, intended to monitor aspects of the health of its users. And while there is a lot of innovation in him, one designer focused on his look, revealing a list of classic watches on which the Apple Watch has drawn inspiration from over six generations.
Designer Arun Venkatesan shared on his website an interesting list with the design details of well-known watches from companies such as Rolex, Breitling, Heuer, from which Apple was inspired.
Apple Watch pays homage to classic watches
Venkatesan’s study did it see the similarities between Apple Watch faces and the long history of chronograph watches dating back to the early 1800s and they have become some of the most popular types of dials.
On the list are California watch faces, used by Rolex, Panerai, Glycine and Kampfschwimmer whose impact is noted in the Apple Watch Series 6 This dial model originates from WWII. At the time, it was believed that the combination of Roman and Arabic numerals made the watch face more readable in poor visibility.
Venkatesan says his research led him to be impressed with Apple’s dedication to design, as “It is clear that Apple has taken the time to study the history of many classic watch faces available digitally on the Apple Watch.”
“As I researched and wrote this essay, my respect only increased. With watch faces, Apple could have taken the easy route simply by mimicking existing watch archetypes at the surface level. Instead, they intensively studied each other’s history. When designing each sphere, took into account this history and the limitations and opportunities offered by modern technology
The design involved in its devices is one of Apple’s strengths, and examples like this show the great work behind each.
