In recent years, animated films have become a visual attraction for boys, girls and adults. And we are not surprised. The tenderness with which they tend to be created, the beauty and intrigue of their plots and, above all, the care of their lively work make them unique.
As a big fan of this type of film, Pixar’s works that have captured millions of hearts around the world obviously stand out: Up, Coco, Del Revés or the most recent Soul, are just a few.
However, it looks like there is one film that is overlooked by many and many and which in my opinion (and that of many others) is the best animated film of 2020.
I’m talking about Wolfwalkers, an original Apple TV Plus movie, created by Cartoon Saloon, an animation studio that created films like The Secret of Kells or The Song of the Sea, nominated for an Oscar.

What is Wolfwalkers about?
This Irish animated film is set precisely in 17th century Ireland. He tells us the story of the friendship of two girls who live at that time and in this part of the world. Everywhere, history is steeped in magic and folklore from Irish culture.
Robin, one of the main daughters, moves with her father to a new town who will become a wolf hunter. During this time, the girl will begin to achieve something very important: girls do not have the same opportunities as boys.
Because of this, Robin will insist on showing that she can be as good a hunter as her father, which is why she goes into the forest to start the hunt.
And here Mebh comes in, and we start to delve into the magic and mysticism of this animated film. The young woman has a super power: to become a wolf when she sleeps and to control the other wolves of her pack who are also the protectors of life in the forest.
Why do we love the Wolfwalkers so much?
For the values it transmits
Wolfwalkers can be used as a referrer. Many young girls will see the film and feel identified with two strong, warlike and capable protagonists. There are no love stories, they are not secondary or passive characters. They act and decide.
Additionally, Wolfwalkers teaches us about the love of nature, the history of the forest and wolves will make the world aware of how important it can be to take care of the environment.
To get closer to a culture and a history
Wolfwalker will also immerse us in Irish culture. It is always enriching to know other cultures and histories. In this case, the film takes particular care to respect the ancient legends of Irish culture and above all, to bring us closer to them.
To use a different creative technique
There is no denying that while watching the trailer for the film, you will be able to realize that this animated film is different. It departs from the more common digital style of current animated films and reverts to previous techniques such as 2D hand drawing.
It’s risky, but it is also true that Wolfwalker achieves an incredible result: visually he is rich, original and very beautiful. In addition, he convinces and loves, which is important.
For its soundtrack
His soundtrack, like his film, is magical. Bruno Coulais is the composer of many of the tracks that make up the film’s soundtrack, a renowned musician who has created soundtracks for many films such as Los Niños del Coro.
Irish folk music group Kila also contributed several songs to the Wolfwalkers soundtrack. The folk element of music could not be missing in a film which draws directly on Irish tradition.
