If there is some kind of digital connection between regular devices, it's Bluetooth. We've had USB 3.0 for many years, without any known evolution. The same thing happens with wireless transfer over Wi-Fi. There have been some improvements in recent years, but not to introduce rockets.
But transfer between devices via Bluetooth is another matter. This technology is constantly evolving, with more or less "specific" policies (APTX, L2CAP, etc.) and other common ones. In less than a decade we have moved from Bluetooth 3.0 to Bluetooth 5.1. Now comes the next one: Bluetooth LE Audio. He Bluetooth Special Group Group
Bluetooth SIG says device developers will use this new protocol for low usage, to extend the independence of future products, or to design it with a smaller battery. At this new level, the existing audio sharing function on AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro has also been added. This Apple feature allows two sets of AirPods to be connected to one iPhone to share audio streaming. The same program is available with the APTX LL Bluetooth protocol.
This new Bluetooth system is the first to directly address the needs of people with hearing loss. Its goal is to promote the development of smaller wireless headphones with longer battery life.
This new protocol is currently under construction. The final description will be published in the middle of the year. In time the first devices with this technology will begin to appear. It will also apply to 2021 AirPods.
