Although there is so far only little secure information about Battlefield 6 and an announcement is still a long way off, a setting in the present or near future is now extremely likely. Of course, this raises questions for fans about the exact setting and the playable factions involved.

The well-known insider Tom Henderson has already commented on this in various places and a rough picture of the conflict drawn, which should determine the action in the new Battlefield.
We summarize the most important key points here. Attention: These details are not officially confirmed, so enjoy the information with healthy skepticism!
- Scenario: Battlefield 6 is set to take place in the near future around the year 2030 and includes modern weapons, equipment and vehicles that are currently being tested or developed by the military. For example, the debut trailer is supposed to show V-22 Ospreys.
- Parties to the conflict: In general, as in Battlefield 3 and 4, the USA and Russia should face each other as “the two last remaining superpowers”, like Henderson writes. But you don’t play them directly at all! Other nations appear in the role of special teams – both parties want to recruit them for their purposes.
- Player as a mercenary: Players slip into the role of exactly these special teams and can therefore decide freely between the USA or Russia (both in the story and in the multiplayer). Henderson concludes that “other nations are playable one way or another.”
Clever storytelling maneuver?
The fact that the teams in the next Battlefield are made up of very different special units from all over the world would be a resourceful move by the developers to solve two problems at once:
- On the one hand, you can do without faction-based weapons (as no »AK-47 for Russia vs. M4 for the USA«), avoid balance problems and offer a diverse arsenal for everyone.
- On the other hand, you have the option of introducing any faction (for example in DLCs), including locations and vehicles, into the conflict while remaining plausible in the setting.

BF6: Already an important title for 2021
Most recently, Tom Henderson first described scenes from the (as yet unpublished) Reveal trailer, which is supposed to show the attack on a Japanese island. When asked by a Twitter user for a playable Japanese faction, Henderson replied:
“The story is about USA versus Russia, but you’re playing as a special unit from other fallen nations. One way or another so all countries are playable. I guess Russia took the island because of the raw materials and the US wants to infiltrate or conquer it. ”
