Always in order to be able to offer you cheaper laptop tests, we had the opportunity to test the Nitro 5 from Acer, with which you can have fun and play under good conditions on a PC without spending too much money. This is the updated version of the model that we were able to test in 2019.
As always with gaming laptops, there are often multiple models. Our trial version is the “highest” version with its i7 and 16 GB GDDR6 RAM, but there are other versions, including one with an i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM. At least that Nitro 5 is said to be one of the cheapest gaming laptops from ACER. The entry level, even if in this case we are almost in the middle range.
Unlike the Dell G3 we recently reviewed, the Nitro 5 didn’t choose to be sober We assure you nothing rude, but we still feel that Acer wanted to show the direction of its product. Aggressive and angular lines, use of the color red for the frame of the frame and the keys of the keyboard. it does not leave you indifferent and we know at first sight what it is fate. It’s well done and you never fall into bad taste. The chassis mixes aluminum and plastic and gives a good impression of solidity. The device measures 54.3 x 7 x 31.6 cm and weighs 2.4 kg.
An “honest” record
The Nitro 5 offers a matte IPS panel with a size of 15.6 inches and a definition of 1920 x 1080 pixels. We are equipped with the 144 Hz refresh rate model, but there is also a 60 Hz model. We encourage you to carefully examine this term before making a possible purchase. Acer didn’t choose thin edges for its Nitro 5, another story of the concession.
It’s not the best about speakers, but it’s still better than some laptops in this price range. We recommend equipping yourself with a good helmet to resolve the problem. Note, however, that the automatically installed MaxxAudio software can improve the situation significantly.
A high quality keyboard, but a recessed trackpad
As is so often the case in this price range, the keyboard is a chiclet, with good mechanical durability and an average stroke. This is very convincing for a laptop and, as always, we recommend playing at home to plug in good old mechanics that inevitably keep getting better. No RGB on this keyboard, but a red backlight for the rest of the PC lines with 5 intensity levels. The trackpad, on the other hand, is less good with a rather uncomfortable click and some lack of flexibility.
Therefore we find on the discs:
- 1 port USB 3.0 type C.
- 2 ports USB 3.0 type A.
- 1 port USB 2.0 type A.
- 1 port mini DisplayPort
- 1 HDMI connection and a jack connection
- 1 port Ethernet
There is something that can be easily plugged into another screen. On the other hand, we regret the lack of a mini SD card.
A good configuration, especially on this model
The Nitro 5 is equipped with:
- processor : Intel Core I7 9750h
- graphic card : Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 ti
- Memory (RAM) : 16 Go DDR6
- camp : 256 GB SSD and 1 TB hard drive
A decent configuration for Full HD / Full Ultra without compromise. We obviously took out our test battery to see what it looks like:
A real pleasure for Full HD in the best conditions. There’s plenty of RAM and the processor is strong enough to sit still for a while. Metro Exodus runs to perfection and even offers the luxury of exceptionally fast loads. Obviously, with greedier games like Cyberpunk 2077, which is coming out very soon (at the time of this writing), we’re sure to have to make some concessions.
In these conditions, the autonomy is inevitably compromised, and for a gaming session the battery lasts no more than an hour and in classic / office mode with videos no more than 4 hours.
If you are in the middle of a gaming session you still have to wait as it is quite noisy. It can even get annoying when someone is right next to you. All the more reason to wear a headset so you don’t lose focus. Of course it is loud, but on the other hand the computer does not overheat and its heat rise remains quite correct.
Le FULL HD / FULL ULTRA WITHOUT CONCESSION!
This is the perfect laptop for Full HD without compromising the details of your graphics options. The GeForce 1660 ti is supported by a well-made processor. Inevitably, when we add the 16GB of RAM there is something familiar with the big AAA games that will hit the market in late 2020. Be careful, however, there are several models of the Nitro 5Some with an i5 processor and some with 8GB of RAM. Above all, check well beforehand.
