Blizzard Vows Not to Replace Diablo 2 with Diablo 2: Resurrected

Geralt of Sanctuary February 24, 2021 No Comments

Blizzard last weekend announced the remaster of Diablo 2 but has also reaffirmed it will not be replacing Diablo 2 with Diablo 2: Resurrected.

Blizzard Vows Not to Replace Diablo 2 with Diablo 2: Resurrected

Blizzard announced Diablo 2: Resurrected, a remastered version of the now 20-year-old action-RPG. The remaster of the original game will include the Lord of Destruction Expansion and adds a graphics upgrade and Dolby 7.1 surround sound.

In video Q&A which was held by Rob Gallerani, the principal designer, he confirmed that Blizzard will not be replacing the original Diablo 2 on their platform. The answer was a firm, “no, absolutely not” to the question “will D2:R overwrite an original D2 installation?” He went on to confirm:

Everything you have about D2 currently will stay D2. This is a separate product, separate game. You can play ’em both at the same time if you want.

Blizzard in the past have removed older versions of games such as when Warcraft 3: Reforged was released, the original Warcraft 3 client on Battle.net was removed, pushing the update to automatically change to Reforged when installed. So it is good to know that this won’t be the case for Diablo 2.

The official Diablo account on Twitter also confirmed that the game will be receiving mod support for Diablo 2 Resurrected:

📜 FULL GAME + LORD OF DESTRUCTION

This is the full terror as I knew it then. This is the original Diablo II, complete with the Lord of Destruction expansion. You will experience my full suffering as you once did. Curse you, Diablo! pic.twitter.com/nzBhi0uqfx

Diablo 2 Resurrected is due out later this year, coming to PC, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. There is cross-progression but no cross-play between platforms. In the meantime be sure to drop by our Diablo 2 Resurrected wiki for all the latest.
