Funcom has made a name for itself above all through the Conan range, but in the future would also like to help another well-known brand to gain new fame: Dune. A planned MMO could now be significantly more extensive than previously planned.

Older among us, Dune is certainly still a household name, because apart from the sci-fi cult stripe, the strategy areas of Westwood – in the style of Command & Conquer – are well known in the gaming area. Funcom wants to help the brand make a comeback in the gaming sector – in line with new film and series projects; that was announced in 2019. An MMO title could now be significantly more extensive than previously planned.
Dune is not even in the focus of today's studio press release, because it is more about a planned takeover of the company by the Chinese giant Tencent. The latter is already involved in several other game companies such as Riot Games, Epic, Ubisoft or Paradox – and already holds 29 percent of Funcom's shares. According to Tencent's will, however, it should become 100 percent, which is why one now approaches the other shareholders to acquire their shares.
Tencent offers NOK 17.00 per share, a value that was a whopping 27.3 percent above the closing price on January 21. Funcom therefore recommends accepting the offer and is positive about the takeover, also because the company should retain its creative freedom. Management will remain unchanged and all online games, especially of course Conan Exiles, will continue to be supported.
But it will be interesting with regard to the future orientation, because the Dune project mentioned at the beginning is taken up more casually. The sandbox game with an open game world, survival elements and multiplayer focus should now be significantly more ambitious and thus be significantly more extensive than Conan Exiles.
"The management intends to make the upcoming Dune game even more ambitious, as far as the board approves it. The resources needed for this should be allocated from other initiatives and other possible financing options," it says in this regard. The battle for Arrakis between Atreides, Ordos and Harkonnen could once again become really epic in the video game sector!
