News culture Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, The Last of Us: When Sony Made Its Movies
In a quarter of a century, Sony and its PlayStation brand have become major players in video games, and the Japanese publisher intends to use its licenses to enter other markets – those of cinema and television series.
Sony’s first attempts
Sony took an interest in cinema and broader audiovisual media long before it opened its video game division. The establishment of Sony Pictures Entertainment in the early 1990s, formerly Columbia Pictures Entertainment and a subsidiary of the Japanese giant, is intended to prove this. Adapting flagship video game licenses to films or series is not a fad, on the contrary. The 1996 anime Battle Arena Toshinden, the 2009 short film Ape Escape, the film and animated series Heavenly Sword, but especially the cartoon Ratchet & Clank released in April 2016 … Sony is not one of the first attempts at everything, what to do with video game customization, and some bugs in the process. The cancellation of the film The Legend of Spyro is just one example. We’d also like to mention the movie Forbidden Siren, directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, the director of the film adaptations of the cult manga 20th Century Boys. Without being perfect, this horror movie deserves a look.
Uncharted, the film will be released in the current news in mid-February 2022. Why in the breaking news? Because this movie is a real survivor. This film version was originally planned for 2016, but has been postponed several times. But do not worry! Filming ended in late 2020. Since its announcement, no fewer than seven directors have followed with Ruben Fleischer, director of Return to Zombieland and Venom, at the helm. Uncharted is the film a sequel to games developed by Naughty Dog Studios and features a young Nathan Drake played by Tom Holland. According to the actor who also gives features to Spider-Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his character is at the crossroads of cinema icons Indiana Jones and James Bond. And the cast matches Sony’s ambitions. Mark Wahlberg, who was Max Payne in the past – some know him by his singer name … Marky Mark – plays Victor “Sully” Sullivan on screen. Antonio Banderas (Zorro and El Mariachi) plays the role of the great evil of the story.
The last of us
Naughty Dog has been on the rise lately. After Uncharted, it’s up to another of the studio’s franchises to experience the joys of adaptation, this time in series. A series that, in contrast to the film Uncharted, should experience a less turbulent development that doesn’t seem very complicated … even if the customization options are sometimes impenetrable. The Last of Us series, announced in 2020, will be produced for HBO. It wouldn’t be surprising if it aired on HBO Max at an as-yet-unknown time. She is supervised by Johan Renck, the director of the hit series Chernobyl. Good news then. Then the fans can be reassured. The script is entrusted to Neil Druckmann, who does not need to present it, and Craig Mazin … the screenwriter on Chernobyl.
Spirit of Tsushima
Directed feudal Japan, and more precisely the 13th century, for this other adaptation of a PlayStation-approved game. Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch Studios is to be adapted as a feature film, according to an official statement from PlayStation Productions
The “One Sony” program
What do Sony Pictures Entertainment and PlayStation Productions have to offer us in the next few years? The Japanese company intends to double-work in the cinema and television series. Internally this cross-media program is called “ONE SONY” and announces the color. According to Tony Vinciquerra, CEO of Sony Pictures, no fewer than three films and seven series from PlayStation licenses are currently in preparation. The first license that comes to mind is necessarily God of War. Rumors and other inside information follow one another without really taking shape. Series or film? In the cinema or in SVOD? Cast Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista? It is difficult to separate the true from the false. In a completely different register, The Last Guardian, the dreamy epic by Fumito Ueda, would be the subject of an adaptation on the big screen. In the scenario we find Max Borenstein, the pen behind Godzilla and King Kong: Skull Island. And there’s no shortage of high potential franchises at Sony, with Horizon coming in bulk: Zero Dawn, inFamous, Bloodborne, Killzone, Death Stranding, or even Nioh. Case to follow.
Sony’s plan to hit the world of cinema and series is underway. Appointment comes in 2022 to discover the first in a long line of adjustments.
