    “.
  • But which of the numerous films and series in the “Karate Kid” universe are actually part of the “Cobra Kai” universe?
  • We list all sequels, spin-offs and remakes, explain the correct order and reveal what is important for “Cobra Kai”.

In 1984 the film “Karate Kid” became a cultural phenomenon. The film by screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen and “Rocky” director John G. Avildsen drew numerous sequels and spin-offs, including remakes and series, including the Netflix

-Hit “Cobra Kai“, were produced. We’ll give you an overview!

How many parts are there in “Karate Kid”?

The first three films in the “Karate Kid” series were created by the writer-director duo Robert Mark Kamen and John G. Avildsen. The main roles are Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi. The chronological order is the same as the appearance.

In 1994, “Karate Kid IV” was made, a film in which neither Kamen nor Avildsen were involved. Ralph Macchio cannot be seen as Daniel either, instead Hilary Swank plays the main role of Julie Pierce.

After Daniel, Julie is the new student of Mr. Myagi, who is again played by Pat Morita. The film is a chronological sequel to the “Karate Kid” trilogy about Daniel LaRusso.

In “Karate Kid” from 2010 no characters are taken from the original films. No reference is made to them either. Jaden Smith plays the role of Dre Parker and Jackie Chan that of his master, Mr. Han.

Instead of karate, kung fu is trained. Even if the reboot is not part of the original film series, it is still part of the franchise. The film plays at the same time as the theatrical release, 2010. Thus, the film would be classified chronologically between the films and “Cobra Kai”.

“Karate Kid” cartoon series

A few months after the theatrical release of “Karate Kid III” was released in 1989 on US stations NBC an animated series called “The Karate Kid”. The main characters are Mr. Miyagi and Daniel LaRusso from the movies. At her side is the new character Taki Tamurai from Okinawa.

Even if Pat Morita lends his voice to Mr. Miyagi in the intros of the episodes, he is set to music by another voice actor, including Daniel. The series has relatively little to do with the movies.

Instead of fighting in the All Valley Tournament, Daniel and Miyagi-san are looking for a sacred shrine that has also piqued the interest of sinister people. Even if the series is not available anywhere in this country, you can watch the first episode in English on YouTube:

It is clear that the first three “Karate Kid” films with Pat Morita, Ralph Macchio and Martin Kove as Mr. Miyagi, Daniel LaRusso and John Kreese are part of the “Cobra Kai” universe. Showrunner Josh Heald made it clearthat “Karate Kid IV” is also relevant to the Netflix series.

The animated series, on the other hand, is not part of the canon, this has been confirmed by Co. showrunner Jon Hurwitz. The “Karate Kid” movie with Jaden Smith has not yet been commented on. The film nowhere contradicts the original films and could take place in the same universe, especially since Will Smith “Cobra Kai” and the 2010 “Karate Kid” film produced.
