For the gaming industry, April is a quiet month.
This NPD The group has released its April US game physics and digital business report. Last month, consumer spending on hardware, software, and accessories totaled US$4.6 billion, a decrease of 2% compared to April last year.
Compared with April last year, hardware dollar sales fell by 30%, reaching 296 million US dollars. Compared to April 2019, they look much better, an increase of 84%.
Nintendo Switch once again became the best-selling game console in terms of U.S. dollars and unit sales this month. So far, Switch has maintained its leading position as the best-selling game console in 2021.
The most interesting release in April was MLB: The Show 21, which was the best-selling game of the month and the third best-selling game so far in 2021. According to NPD data, MLB: Show’s sales of $21 set a new record for the series of games, partly because the game was released on the Xbox platform at the same time, which was the first time in the series.
MLB: There is no doubt that Show 21 was also the best-sell ing game on PlayStation in April and ranked second on Xbox. Call of Duty: “Black Ops” Cold War ranked second in overall sales, followed by “New Pokemon”.
Just like Nintendo’s exclusive trend, New Pokemon Snap is Switch’s best-selling game, and its retail sales in the month of release are more than twice that of the original Pokemon Snap. Another exclusive game in April is PS5’s Returnal, which was released on the last day of the month and successfully ranked 8th and 3rd on PlayStation.
