Mass Effect: Legendary Edition: That’s why multiplayer does not return in the remaster

Geralt of Sanctuary February 4, 2021 No Comments

The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is currently on everyone’s lips. The trilogy remake only takes up the single player part, but you have to do without the multiplayer. Why actually?

When the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition appears in May 2021, all single-player content and almost all relevant DLC packages will be on board. In the revised version, however, there is no trace of the multiplayer part. Project Director Mac Walters reveals why this is so in an interview.

Talking to the English speaking Game Informer

Walters emphasized that the integration of the multiplayer part in a revised form would simply have been “too complicated”. According to him, gamers would want to play this anyway primarily because of the story elements and less because of the multiplayer aspects.

If you had tackled the subject, that would simply be “tons [zusätzliche] Work “. At the same time, you would have been confronted with many questions during the implementation, for example whether you would have overwhelmed the overhaul of the engine.” I think people underestimate what it’s like to make this game because you are with every step is faced with the nagging questions: ‘Is this the thing we are spending time on and really wanting to improve?’ and ‘Where will this actually lead us in the further course?’ “, says Walters.

So he adds: “I have a strong feeling that we picked the things that the majority of our fans value the most. As for the multiplayer, it was really just really tough. All the online systems up and running and the entire functionality, that would have been a huge effort. At the same time, all kinds of logistical issues have to be taken into account. The game environment is completely different. Then questions came up like: ‘Will we support this after the release? What about the People who still play multiplayer today? Are we trying to find a way to somehow allow cross-play between the PS3 and PS4? ‘”

Ultimately, the effort for all this is simply too great, which is why there will be no multiplayer.

The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will be released on May 14, 2021 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One; The title can also be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X / S via the downward compatibility of the new consoles.
