Blizzard wants to influence Overwatch's metagame more and more frequently in the future in order to keep the gaming experience fresh. In a new developer video, game director Jeff Kaplan has now promised that the title will receive more frequent and then more noticeable updates in the future.
In the course of this, Blizzard will also integrate a new experimental map, on which major gameplay changes will then be tested first. This then works something like the test run of balance updates on the public test realm PTR. There is a crucial difference in this regard: The experimental map will be available on all platforms and not just the PC.
Depending on the test results, changes do not necessarily have to be transferred from the experimental map to the live version of Overwatch including the competitive modes. However, according to Kaplan, players can very well earn progress and loot boxes in experimental mode.
A major change has also already been communicated: Overwatch's competitive game mode is to be supplemented by so-called hero pools in the future. Every week in Season 21, certain heroes are disabled in competitive games and are not available for selection. This should constantly increase and change the diversity of the hero selection. The design team decides which heroes are to be deactivated directly and not at random.
The hero pools, on the other hand, are not supposed to find their way into quick-play and arcade matches, but could certainly make the leap into the Overwatch League later.
