A finale in a class of its own: On May 16, Re-Logic finished developing Terraria with the major update 1.4 Journey's End after more than nine years. And with the release, the 2D sandbox catapults itself in the top 3 from Steam's most played game.
At the weekend, the indie title almost went half a million users at the same time welcome. On May 17th, there were still more than 400,000. So many players at once couldn't even reach GTA 5, as the comparison on SteamDB shows. In addition, Terraria is currently number one on the worldwide sales charts for Valves distribution platform.
The tough competition
Such a success is not a matter of course. Because the most played titles on Steam are dominated by a series of evergreens that are updated regularly and can keep their number of players constant for a long time. Terraria has cut an impressive number of blockbusters with Journey's End. In the list we name the peak from Sunday, May 17th, 2020, as well as the all-time record.
Of course, you have to keep in mind that not all of these games are only available on Steam. Grand Theft Auto 5 and Rainbow Six: For example, you can also play Siege without starting Steam. As a result, the real number of players in these titles should be larger. Nevertheless, it is impressive what Terraria achieved in the end.
In the meantime, PUBG was able to claim third place again, which puts Terraria in fourth place, which is still very strong.
What does the last update Journey's End deliver?
The official patch notes of the final update include an abundance of changes. With new game modes such as Journey and Master modes, new bosses, opponents and allies and more than 1,000 additional items it vastly extends the scope of the game
It wasn't until April 2020 that the team announced that Terraria has sold more than 30 million copies since its release in May 2011. The the strongest platform for the title is the PC, on which more than 14 million copies were sold.
In the past, Re-Logic stated that they themselves do not yet know which project they will tackle after Terraria. However, they recently posted one Publication of the source code of the set Terraria: Otherworld in view. The petition required for this has now reached more than 33,000 of the 100,000 signatures requested.
