Survival games are currently very popular on Steam, especially during the Steam Sales. The Forest attracts more players than ever to its cooperative cannibal forest and other genre representatives show that they are far from being old.
In the Steam bestsellers of the week Two survival games are back that have already ranked among the top 10 with the highest turnover several times: Raft, which tests your survival instincts on an ocean and islands, and Rust, the infamous PvP survival sandbox, which pioneered in 2013 of the genre and the Early Access model counted equally on Steam.
Raft comes in sixth place, while Rust even ranks fourth among the top-selling products on Steam. A look at the current number of players shows that both games are also popular with active users.
The number of players is also increasing
Raft on the rise: Raft is still in Early Access, but already convinces 91 percent of all players who rated it on Steam. The survival game now brings together over 78,000 reviews. The good sales are also reflected in the number of players. Since the pre-release in May 2018, thousands have been playing Raft, in December 2020 with almost 12,000 simultaneously active players on average more than ever before.
Rust at an all-time high: Rust is one of the survival games with the largest active player base anyway. It has also been growing steadily since 2013. 85 percent of over 400,000 reviewers give a thumbs up. Most recently, Rust set two new records with an average of 66,000 simultaneous users and a new all-time high of over 131,000.
In both titles, strong sales go hand in hand with a growing base of active players. You can read what else the genre has to offer in our top list of the best current survival games. What you can look forward to in 2021, you can read here:

Directly behind is the co-op pirate adventure Sea of Thieves, followed again by the Valve Index VR Kit, which has been in the top 10 since its release in June 2019.
The indie roguelike Hades romps between Rust and Raft auf, which ultimately counts as one of the best games of 2020 for the press and game awards. The ghost hunter game Phasmophobia continues to sell successfully and occupies seventh place.
Eighth and ninth place belong to Rockstar Games with the long-running GTA 5 and the long-awaited PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. The latter was one of the winners at the Steam Awards 2020, where there were also many surprises:
