NASA has created a new video game on purpose.
In NeMO-NET, players use their iPhone, iPad, or computer to dive deeper into the ocean, identifying and separating all the corals it encounters. The photos were taken on a real-life ocean voyage, and playing the game will help scientists create a better coral map of the world that can help with conservation efforts before being stoned.
For the past several years, scientists from NASA & # 39; s Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley have looked at the ocean in the world, using the new tools right with a distorted water distortion to show a clearer, more detailed look under the sea floor. By installing new tools in drones and aircraft, scientists have discovered 3D images of corals, algae, and sea turtles during visits to Puerto Rico, Guam, and American Samoa. But now, scientists have to use all that information, where the game enters.
At NeMO-Net, you can look at the origin of these excursions, learn about the different coral types and highlight where they come from. Along the way, you can earn badges and track your progress. The game has organized sound and sharp, beautiful graphics at a time when we can all spend some cool break time. And it helps with preservation: All the information that users generate by playing the game helps train NASA's executive director to identify the corals themselves.
"NeMO-Net uses the most power on the planet: not the average camera or the person in charge, but the people," NASA chief investigator Ved Chirayath, who founded the neural network after the game, said in a statement. "Anyone, or even a first-time student, can play this game and edit this information to help us enroll in one of the best lifestyles we know."
The game comes at a crucial time. The oceans are home to many species such as tropical rain forests. They are also important for human health and the planet as they are an important source of food and they help to regulate carbon in the atmosphere, among other important functions.
They are also at risk of pollution, overfishing, and rising sea levels, and acidity. And coral reefs are one of the world's most endangered species. Just this month, investigators found that the entire Great Barrier Reef was between an event of unprecedented crisis
Although we know that the world's oceans are at risk, we don't have their detailed map. The work done by NASA can help build the one that serves as the basis for coral health. That can help us understand which parts of the ocean are most in need, thanks to the biodiversity conservation and the billions of coastal people who depend on the sea.
"Coral metals are an integral part of our health care system," said Sylvia Earle, a health conservation myth and co-founder of the project. "They define us, we define the sea, they define our land."
