Skilloz, the current world record holder for the hilariously named “Blue Yourself” categoryuploaded a video yesterday (h / t Polygon) shows that it is possible to go from the start of the race to running out in a Blue Shell explosion in just under 38 seconds. If you’re a fan of Baby Daisy – there has to be at least one of you out there – you might want to look away.

The items you get will depend on how far you are from the first place. Knowing this, I have a sandbag in the beginning to get a good chance of getting a star. Then I rush to the next set of items and got to the point where there is also a pretty good chance of getting triple mushrooms. These aren’t all that hard to come by if you can position yourself correctly.
The hardest part is getting the blue clam. There is no real way to manipulate it. You can only get a Blue Shell if you are at least 2000 units behind the first place. Since this is the closest value, there is a 5% chance that you will get a blue clam. Also, you cannot receive a blue shell until 30 seconds have passed in the game.
So when I hesitate in front of these item boxes, I am waiting for these two things: the CPU in first place, which has at least 2000 units in front of me, and 30 seconds of playtime [to pass]. My favorite speed runs are those where the players take a small, preferably ridiculous, part of a game and very seriously learn how to do it fast. It’s hard to say how few people will be able to achieve Blue Yourself times Mario Kart 8 Deluxebut you can bet I’ll watch with bated breath.
