2020 was not a good year for checking the internet. A nice bonus when playing on new, faster consoles is that I run out of time Doomscroll via Twitter more.
I first noticed this when I was playing Godfallof all games. I like Godfall. It’s pointless fun with some shiny, fancy graphics, and a satisfying amount of loot and combat. But it’s not the most exciting game, so I wander through my mind a little in cutscenes or between missions. And when I’m in this state, I usually pick up my phone and check Twitter during long downtime. This usually meant when loading screens. But I can’t do that anymore because Godfall
I still grab my phone when games like a loading screen or loading bar appear Miles Morales or Godfall. Habits don’t break overnight. But if I grab it, the game is done and it’s time to play.
I could pause the game and do some doom scrolling, but I try to avoid that as much as possible. I don’t have to read every single update about how the president is trying to use legal proceedings and cowardly Republicans to break democracy. I don’t have to read every new report about how bad the Covid-19 pandemic is getting. I don’t have to watch millions of people around the world make fun of basic research and avoid wearing masks. I don’t need any of this unless a video game is loaded and ready to play.

When we walked into these consoles we knew they were going to be quick. However, it is one thing to see a video from Sony that shows how quickly a game loads. It’s a whole different thing when this game is in your room and it’s really, really that fast. No tricks. No editing spells. Only raw speed and performance are passed through a 4k display. And all of that power helps me spend less time reading bad tweets and watching sad news clips, which is a great help for my general mental state.
I will never completely stop doing doom scrolling or reading the news. (Whatever you want to call it.) I care too much about what’s going on to really disconnect. But these new consoles and their quick loading screens and instant startups shortened a few minutes of my day that I spent looking at a tiny screen, hoping for good news but finding only pain, sadness, and despair.
Now I’ve replaced that time with web slinging and tall men wielding swords against lizard men. As a result, I’m a happier person for it.
