Andrzej Sapkowski, author of The Witcher series of novels, and CD Projekt Red, developer of The Witcher video game series, they signed a new license agreement
The story begins with an informal interview with Slkowski which was also offered, in 2017. In that revealing interview, the author stated that when CD Projekt approached him Witch The video game, released in 2008, kicked off the show.
"I was stupid enough to sell them rights [in all my novels]," he tells Eurogamer. “They gave me a percentage of their profit. I said, & # 39; No, there will be no profit at all – give me all my money now! The total. & # 39; It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I don't believe in their success. But who can see their success? I couldn't. ”
Just over a year later, Sapkowski had second thoughts. In a bold letter to the CD Projekt, made public in October 2018, he said that under Polish law he was unjustly paid for his work. His claim for compensation is from Postman 3: Wild Hunt alone worth more than $ 16.11 million in royalty. At the time CD Projekt was writing an official statement to its investors
"The company has the legal and statutory authority of Mr Andrzej Sapkowski's work," said CD Projekt, "as it needs to be used in games created by the Company.
However, CD Projekt has left the negotiating door open.
"It is the company's desire to maintain good relations with the authors of the works that have inspired the creation of CD Projekt Red," the same statement said. “As a result, the Board will work hard to find a reasonable solution to this dispute; however, any such decision must respect the stated objectives of both parties, and the existing contracts. "
In a temporary press release today, CD Projekt said that he and Sapkowski "signed an agreement that strengthened their relationship." The new agreement, the statement continues, "fully and fully expresses the needs and expectations of both parties, past and present, and sets the party's future cooperation between the two parties." It applies not only to video games, but also to graphic novels, board games, and more. related sales.
Investors statement contains most of the same type of language, but also notes that the non-disclosure agreement limits that additional allocation.
Polygon was found on CD Projekt for further comment, but no offers.
Today's announcement deals with the premium Witch series on Netflix, which is based on Sapkowski's work as the basis of its narrative.
