Earlier this week Twitch removed its hugely popular Pogchamp emoteRyan “Gootecks” Gutierrez, expressing his excitement in chat after the emote riot, encouraged further “unrest” after the Capitol riot. Now, just two days later, Gutierrez’s likeness is being replaced with an elaborate plan that is honestpretty poggers.
Today on Twitter
“You know what? To find out together in 2021, let’s just roll it now!” The company wrote. “Get ready for a new Pogchamp every 24 hours starting today.”
Today’s Pogchamp fights against gaming expert Kenny “UnRoolie” McWild, the beforehand he threw his hat into the ring the defacto Pogchamp replacement. Tomorrow could be anyone, but I suspect it will likely be someone else who has already volunteered on Twitter.
The rotating Pogchamp idea was originally proposed from longtime gaming personality Sean “Day9” Plott not long after Twitch removed the original Pogchamp emote.
G / O Media can receive a commission
It’s not hard to see why Twitch liked the idea: if a single person had been chosen to be Pogchamp’s new face, that streamer would almost certainly have been exposed to harassment and other forms of unwanted attention. That way, the eye of Sauron molesting dickheads at least has to look around a lot instead of focusing its anger in one place. However, this won’t necessarily stop people from chasing after the streamer of the day, and it will open up new ways like Twitch to give the spotlight to a streamer who has a troubled history. This is new territory, however, so there’s no telling how it will actually turn out. Maybe that’s the most pogig part of them all.
