Being a fan of a series can be difficult at times, and Persona 5 Strikers tried to remind me, among other things. The new spin-off from the developers of Omega Force’s Dynasty Warriors is a faithful sequel to the acclaimed Persona 5 and continues the story of the main game. It seems like a dream came true, but to be honest, I have to admit that it took me several weeks to accept the product as it is. Be careful, I’m not saying the studio did a bad job, quite the contrary. The thing is, my heart beats for another game.
This title is the direct continuation of Persona 5, both from a gameplay point of view and from a narrative point of view. The events begin half a year after the end of the psychotic crisis. The phantom thieves meet in Tokyo to spend the holidays together. Before they can enjoy it, however, Joker and his friends see a mysterious enemy steal people’s wishes. Apparently this is not an isolated incident, but the tip of the iceberg of a larger conspiracy taking place across Japan. To investigate this strange series of changes in the hearts of the inhabitants, we will embark on an adventure in which we will travel all over the country in a caravan.
The story of Persona 5 Strikers follows exactly the formula of a JRPG. However, sometimes it seems to go too fast and there is a lack of nuances. On the other hand, the end of the game is quite long, we would even say that this is more than necessary and the overall experience is more focused and action oriented. After this 50 hours of playtimeNow I can start the new game + which is roughly half of what Persona 5 offers us. Of course, when it comes to gameplay, this derivative has a lot in common with the JRPG classics. As a gamer, you will have to move forward thanks to the conversations, explore urban environments full of detail, and manage your team to do well with that nine playable characters

However, we can say that the gameplay is quite superficial as it is based on the RPG framework of the main series (Shin Megami Tensei). This means that it is not enough to master the mechanics of the game, but that you also need to pay special attention elementary strengths and weaknesses Your different people.
The mixture of these two elements is more logical than it seems at first glance. For example, using many skills comes with a mana cost, so you need to think carefully about how and when to use them. On the other hand, with the combos achieved, you can develop your basic powers at no additional cost. This is important when you are facing an uphill battle. Otherwise, your mana pool will run out very quickly and you will have very few options. You can also skip most of the battered parts if you know how to use your spells well and attack the enemies’ weak points and stop their every action.
To be honest, I had a hard time putting the latter into practice, but in the end I succeeded. Fighting smaller shadows in the first half of the game is not a challenge. However, when it comes to boss fights, you need to understand the RPG part. Unfortunately, Persona 5 Strikers hasn’t struck the balance between these two aspects, and this can be a bit frustrating. That said, the mix will get better later as the fights become more strategic after you collect some strong personas. In this part of the game you still have to learn and interpret the movements of your opponents, but from the middle of the game the fights become more dynamic and fun.
In order to be able to evaluate the technical presentation of Persona 5 Strikers, it is helpful to put the development process in context. Omega Force, Koei Tecmos Studio, began active production of this title in late 2016, not long after Atlus released Persona 5 in Japan. The design and sound are similar to the main game as Atlus’ own Persona department (P-Studio) worked with them on these aspects. In Japan the title was released a year ago, but in other countries the localization process took a little longer. In a few weeks, the latest Phantom Thieves adventure will finally be available with English voices and English, French, Italian, German and Spanish subtitles. Much of this project, however, seems a bit out of date by today’s standards.
For example, the picture quality on 4K displays is very poor and bold colors are mainly used to create textures with a lower resolution. In addition, the linear design of the layers cannot hide this either. Even more obvious, however, is the disastrous HUD which makes it very difficult to keep track of what is happening, which is completely unnecessary. On the other hand, dialog boxes and action commands block our field of vision at crucial moments and distract us from more important things. Now I have to admit that while playing the PS4 version on my PS5, the console didn’t seem to have any performance issues regardless of what was happening on the screen. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you if Nintendo Switch and PC gamers can have the same experience.
If we look at other projects Omega Force has done over the past few years, we can appreciate the special attention that Persona 5 has been given during its long development process. The studio has managed to take apart one of the best (and most complex) RPGs on PS4 and adapt it to its own style of play, without neglecting the game’s theme, story and characters. In my opinion, despite the fact that the sum of its parts leads to something inconsistent, there are many moments that are made smile by the saga’s loyal fans. However, to appreciate them, it takes patience to endure some of the game’s weaknesses along the way.
