Since this is a new release in the Werewolf: Apocalypse universe, you can imagine my extreme hunger for its release, especially after the creators of Cyanide Studio announced that it would be an action RPG title. Also, I assumed that there was no way they would dare to bring something as disastrous as what they started in the midst of the new generation. I have to say, however, that before the game started, I never imagined how wrong it could be.
Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Erdblut had a lot of potential to be at least a decent title. Their basis was well thought out, and the truth is that it is difficult to accept that the end result was a game that can be described as “bearable” at best and is absent in almost all aspects. In addition, it has so many shortcomings that it is difficult to enjoy yourself, let alone experience the feeling of excitement while playing.
Is it so strange to expect that dose of excitement in a werewolf game? Because I really expected it. Given that Cyanide’s product was to continue one of the most important parts of the universe in the World of Darkness, and that the creators promised that they would be able to keep the original game’s narrative style, he hoped to experience the pain he got first feels -hand. the Garou by fighting for a lost cause. I really expected to be enslaved and corrupted by the wickedness of the wyrm, and eventually I hoped that even if I didn’t win anything, I could have at least a few hours of fun. Anyway, a shame …
We play as Cahal, one of the members of the werewolf pack who are desperately fighting to save Gaia. Not only does our protagonist have the typical boisterous look, but is also inherently tough and aggressive, which is expected to be reflected in many of the dialogue options available in his human form. However, I assume that even the old Bethesda games offered less rigid chat animations than this one. Joking aside, this level of quality for a game from none other than the ninth generation of consoles is absolutely inappropriate. Especially when the developers boast that the title takes advantage of the latest technological advances from PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Even if we ignore such hollow dialogues that add absolutely nothing to the plot and are not attractive at all, the game does not improve. For example, in addition to his human appearance, Cahal can also take the shape of a crino (a mix of human and wolf), most commonly used in open combat, and the shape of a lupus (or simply a wolf). , which is ideal for secretly infiltrating enemy bases. Of these three options, I liked the werewolf shape the most. However, most places aren’t really prepared for you to hide, so the player turns into a horse. But hey, there would be nothing wrong with resorting to combat all the time, if at least it was done right. Plus, I remember having a lot of fun in the Prototype series, destroying everything in my path. In the case of Earth Blood, it’s hard to get carried away when the game insists on making it as difficult as possible. Tidal and bad cameras, hard-to-interpret enemy reactions and constant chaos – this is the shortest and most accurate summary I can give of all the battles out there, including boss fights.
To add variety to the title, the developers have introduced completely unnecessary development trees, as a game based on an RPG should have one by default. In the end, however, this turned out to be completely boring, which wasn’t surprising. None of the ideas were refined in the slightest, so that the whole thing looked more like leftover soup than a sensible, thoughtful and, above all, passionately prepared dish. I also think that most of the fans of the original game didn’t expect a complex role-playing game as these features are offered in the tabletop version. Therefore, by cutting out a lot of unnecessary content, the authors could have concentrated on fewer aspects and made them more important.
If the stealth and combat elements had worked better … the key word here is “yes”. It’s hard to take stealth phases seriously when the wolf has to switch to human form every time he has to stealthily eliminate the enemy because for some reason someone on the development team decided that the beast couldn’t. Likewise, it is practically impossible to have fun fighting when opponents appear chaotically on the screen.
I had very high expectations and ran into this new edition of Cyanide as Little Red Riding Hood with a basket in hand, running away from the wolf. This time, however, I expected the wolf to jump out of bed, grab me and bite my skin, and then spit it on the floor. I would have loved to see the giant eyes of Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earth Blood, if its terrible graphics hadn’t made mine bleed. I would be talking about his big ears, but the truth is, the soundtrack made me cover mine. I would praise its sharp teeth if the gameplay wasn’t so boring. On top of that, the new gamification of the werewolf tries to combine aspects of other species in a very forced way, and in the end it turns out to be flat and difficult to digest. We may one day come across a game that deserves the title, but today, dear players, we don’t have it.
