Aloy is criticized for not being a “real woman”
It is very sad, but very sad that I feel the need to write these lines. Not for paying attention to 4 guys who, seeing what they’ve seen, don’t know anything about women, but because it’s not even the first time I’ve broached this subject. A few months ago, while talking to my girlfriend, an old article I wrote in 2018 came into conversation on the occasion of the launch of ‘Assassin’s Creed Odyssey‘and the participation of Cassandra as an alternate main character.
In this article, I have expressed my thoughts on how Ubisoft had to give up giving a greater leading role to Cassandra, since, despite the fact that the game is clearly oriented to deal with this character (from what I saw based on spoilers in networks and analysis, since at the moment I have not completed it at 100%), promotion and advertising are concentrated in Alexios, since seeing what had happened with Battlefield 5It seems that they preferred not to lose this audience which “refuses to play with an aunt”.
Now, in the middle of 2021, I see how one of the games I have been waiting for the most for the end of this year is embroiled in some absurd controversy because now it turns out that Aloy She is not considered a real woman because of her facial features, accusing designers of even making her fat. For all this, the saddest thing is not so much that I have to write this article, but that the reason for doing it is that 2 and a half years later, we are still not moving forward at all.
Ellie also went through the same thing as Aloy
This zero lead doesn’t just come from what we’re living with now Aloybut a year ago Ellie of The Last of Us Leaves 2 went through the same thing, planting unnecessary controversy that weighed down the game’s publicity (although it hardly hurt its sales and critical success). Anyway, there weren’t a few (and I’m using the masculine on purpose) who said they wouldn’t play the title of The evil dog because they did not feel identified with a lesbian woman.
Obviously, the answers to this absurd argument didn’t wait, as many began to wonder if they felt identified with Kratos, Mario and other male characters with unreal bodies. Needless to say, the best answer to the latter was given by Enrique, Short Reviews, who in his review was worth redundancy, on the title said many did not feel identified with Ellie because this one had a girlfriend. More than one must have a bite.
Anyway, watch what The Last of Us Leaves 2 has very reprehensible things (there is my 9 in his Analysis), But Ellie This is by far the least that he should have received a beat, because if with the first title he gave us a character of 10 with Joel, in the second game they did the same with a character that went beyond revenge from my point of view. However, since she is not pretty and in addition she is a lesbian, she is not valid. Following.
The duke, Dimitrescu and absolute silence
Now returning to the real women argument, it’s time to make the jump to another recent title that many of you will surely know well even if you haven’t played, which is none other than Resident Evil 8 Village, a title that introduces us to two characters who are living proof of the hypocrisy that exists with this type of argument: Alcina Dimitrescu Yes The Duke.
Starting with Dimitrescu, is a lady who is 3 meters tall, which already specifies one thing: there is no woman in the real world who reaches this height. However, since it was shown in the first trailer for the title, I haven’t heard anything about this character’s disproportion. Can I tell you why? Come closer, that’s what I’ll whisper: because Dimitrescu looks good.
The lady wears a tight dress and features a fairly wide torso throughout the game. In fact, in one of the game’s cutscenes, we get a close-up of it. For all that, why is he going to criticize him if when I go down to the bakery there are 5 women standing in line? Obviously, what I’m saying in this paragraph is ironic, but there you have the level of this situation.
And to give more importance we will talk about The Duke, character you can see in the picture above. Obviously there are some overweight people in real life (but not in general), but I haven’t heard of them. Not the slightest mention that this character is unreal. It turns out he’s a male character, but what do I know.
Aware of this double criterion which exists in certain sectors of the video game community, we return to the case which concerns us Aloy, victim of some harassment from these same sectors. And the problem here is not that a fictional character experiences this harassment, but that it is the female sex and the women who have suffered from it for years.
Throughout these days, everything has been said about the current conception of Aloy at Horizon 2 Forbidden West, who started with the argument that she is too fat to be a female character, which is absurd for two reasons, since, on the one hand, she does not have extra pounds and, on the other hand part, in which law is the maximum weight that a female character should have? Because I studied law and had never heard of anything like it.
Finally, it is in the last 24 hours that we have been able to see the limit of the absurd, being the reason that encouraged me to write all these lines: the image you have just above. According to its author, the one on the right is a real woman, while the one on the left is not. Needless to say, Aloy’s face is that of the actress Hannah hoekstra, a person of flesh and blood.
Aloy is one of the best the industry has given
I don’t want to last any longer because I think the message I intended to convey with all of this is already more than given. However, I can’t think of a better way to end this article than by emphasizing an issue we should be looking at further down: whatever your physique, Aloy is one of the best female characters the video game industry has given us.
She is a round character with a past that has made her be where she is in her own universe, arriving with ambitions that will no doubt be harnessed in Horizon 2: West forbidden. And like her there are many others, like the one already mentioned Ellie, Cassandra, Samus, Chloe, among many others. However, in the end, the flaw is still the same for many: being a woman.
And this is not something that is limited only to the world of video games, because in different areas of hobbies, if a female character does not meet certain physical characteristics, the rest of the aspects do not matter, she just won’t like it. All of the above said, I can’t think of a better way to end this article than with the following quote for those who say that Aloy is not a real woman: It’s not that Aloy isn’t a real person, she just doesn’t give you a handjob.
