Happy holidays to yokai hunters! As promised, I’m delighted to announce the heartbreaking conclusion of Nioh 2, The First Samurai *, the latest DLC expansion in our Team Ninja history, is out today.
To commemorate this occasion, I wanted to bring you a glimpse into the development of this third and final expansion which will take our protagonist to the beginning of the Heian period (794 – 1185), taking them deeper into the past than ever before in the saga.
As mentioned above, The First Samurai takes you to the beginning of the Heian period, far into the past of ancient Japanese history. At that time, Japanese swords as we know them today did not even exist! Weapons with the general shape of straight swords with a slight curvature began to be produced at this point in history. With the story taken so far into the past, we thought about what equipment and yokai we would include. Only yokai from this period or from an earlier period could be included, so we took a long time to assess which ones would be suitable for this expansion. Or at the very least, include yokai who felt believable to be around during this time.
This expansion will feature the dreaded and terrifying Oni, Otakemaru, while revealing the inner emotions of many characters who will appear throughout your adventure. As you travel through the new locations found in The First Samurai, all of the mysteries presented in the base game will be revealed to bring the exciting story of Nioh 2 to a definitive end. We have put a lot of effort into to showcase the beauty of this region while contrasting it with the grim “land where the yokai reside”, which should make even the most seasoned player tremble with fear. Our designers have strived to leave a lasting impression of this impressive field on everyone. Hope you look forward to learning more about this when you venture into the final chapter for yourself.
The legend of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who is said to have defeated Otakemaru, is the oldest recorded story in Japanese history of a serviceman working for the Imperial Court and one of Japan’s best-known stories. He is recognized by many as the first shogun of Japan, and his story has been passed down through generations through many accounts, causing many variations of his legend to appear over the years.
So, in accordance with this tradition, we wanted to bring our own variation of the legend of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro.
I hope even fans of historically accurate tales of her story can recognize the many exaggerated ways her story has been told and watch our tale, laugh for themselves and see beyond the freedoms we’ve taken with it. history. We hope you all enjoy this new take on the story of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and potentially explore other tales.
This brings an end to the compelling stories behind our Nioh 2 DLC expansions. We hope you enjoyed the trip and have fun with The First Samurai, as you discover the thrilling conclusion to the story of Nioh 2!
