Sony clears doubts about backward compatibility

Last Wednesday, Sony finally broke the silence on the specs of the playstation 5, its next generation hardware. Of course, one of the most anticipated themes in Mark Cerny's presentation was that of backward compatibility, however, the main architect's explanation of the console raised certain doubts among the audience. For this reason, the company has come out to clear out the questions.

Cerny mentioned that the PlayStation 5, during its launch, would be backward compatible with the 100 most popular PlayStation 4 games. Some understood that those titles will be the only ones to benefit from the novelty, but they will not. Hideaki Nishino, vice president of platform management at Sony Interactive Entertainment, promised that you can enjoy "the vast majority" of the PS4 catalog on the new console

.

A quick update on backward compatibility with previous versions: With so many amazing games in the PS4 portfolio, we are dedicating significant efforts to letting our fans play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the vast majority of the more than 4,000 PS4 titles will be playable on PS5

Nishino further notes that their goal is for backward compatible games to receive some kind of visual improvement thanks to the technical might of the PlayStation 5: "We hope that backward compatible titles will run at increased frequency on PS5 so that they can take advantage of higher or more stable frame rate, or potentially higher resolutions." To achieve this, they are analyzing each video game to detect inconveniences that hinder its promise.

So what is the real meaning of Cerny's message? Sony says the engineer was referring to how well his efforts are going in analyzing the 100 most popular PS4 games. That is to say, at least this list is going according to plan, although for now they cannot guarantee that 100% of them will have no problem. "We have tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move towards launch. In the coming months we will provide updates on the compatibility with previous versions, along with many other new features of PS5," concluded the manager. The hardware will hit the market during the last quarter of 2020 ..
