God of War received a remaster in 2018 and since then, it has continually been at the forefront of gamers’ minds as one of the best PlayStation games. Although we don’t know much about its next installment at this point, we do know that the game plans to release next year on PS5. As God of War basked in the limelight of a remaster, the first three Uncharted games were transferred directly to the PlayStation 4 and that was it. However, a former Sony employee recently spoke about his experience working for a particular PlayStation studio and commented that Uncharted 1 and God of War were in consideration for a remaster with a modern graphics update.
Michael Mumbauer, former head of Sony San Diego Studio, was chatting with Twisted Metal and God of War director David Jaffe during one of Jaffe’s more recent Gabbin + Gamin segments. Throughout the conversation, Mumbauer and Jaffe talked about different aspects of his role while employed at Sony San Diego Studios and how his job saw him overseeing a visual arts group that provided support to other Sony game studios, but ultimately , his role began to change. which saw him move more towards remakes and remasters.
When Jaffe asked if he could explain it in a little more detail, Mumbauer replied, “Remakes and remasters were the things I was after. That’s why the development team was created. What I can tell you is that’s what I was after because I believed there was value in making something like a God of War remake with today’s visual fidelity. Or a remake of Uncharted 1. ”Although Mumbauer is no longer working on the studio, the team in question still exists, which is made up of around 200 people in total, and is currently working on an unannounced title. It remains to be seen if the current team has taken over Mumbauer’s ideas or if the studio will release a new IP, or even a sequel to some rumor that it will be Uncharted 5.
As we’ve seen, Sony delved deeper and brought one of their classics into a new era with the Demon’s Souls PS5 remaster, so it shows this can be done well and maybe we could see a God of War or Uncharted 1 remake, But until we know for sure what the team is working on, it will certainly be the subject of speculation.
