Gutwal is a finite roguelike.
This may sound strange, so let me explain: I really enjoy my time on modern roguelikes, but at some point I realize that I have to accelerate another 200 hours to beat the game. And then, 200 hours later, the game tells me: “Actually there is a new game +++ mode and you are not finished yet!”
And then I stop playing, but the game stays in the back of my mind forever, lurking and judging me for not actually finishing it.
So with Gutwal
This means that while Gutwal randomly created levels and upgrades and achievements and various starting equipments, it’s a very compressed game.
The fights in tight spaces are very quick, so they don’t last very long. If you defeat all the enemies, the ground will break and you will fall straight to the next level.
If you can do this enough times you will win, you will escape the whale, but through its … um, yeah, this is not a very pleasant experience.
So once you’ve “beat the game” and “escaped the whale,” a new escape route opens up. I don’t want to talk about how exactly this works because I think it’s a nice surprise.
All I can say is that it gives you multiple options so that you can choose your own preferred style of play in order to reach the real ending without having to grind long or being forced to get extreme reflexes when you don’t want to .
In the end, I think all of this comes together to create exactly the kind of game I wanted to play myself: a finite roguelike!
