¿Quantum technology in a smartphone? This is the new Samsung Galaxy Quantum 2, equipped with a quantum chip that adds an extra layer of security.
A few weeks ago it was leaked and now it’s official. The Samsung Galaxy Quantum 2 is the second generation of a smartphone different from the South Korean company’s lineup, but one that we’ll likely see here (in part) like the Samsung Galaxy A82.
What makes this model different is the quantum cryptography technology which have been integrated into the smartphone to provide greater security. This mobile was developed between Samsung and the South Korean operator SK Telecom and it may sound like a James Bond movie, but it’s real.
Random quantum number generator
Beyond the specifications and typical components found in any smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Quantum 2 incorporates a chip developed by the company Quantum ID and called “QRNG”: Random quantum number generator, and it is the smallest such chip in the world being a square of only 2.5mm.
This chip is capable of generating completely random numbers, without identifiable patterns and 100% unpredictable. According to SK Telecom, this chip allows users of this smartphone to use services with much higher security. For example, it is already in use with South Korean companies and banks such as Shinhan Bank and Standard Chartered Bank Korea.
An interesting point is that the QRNG chip works automatically with any application that use the Android Keystore API, so its integration by developers, or future manufacturers who want to add hardware like this, shouldn’t be complicated.
