Disney + has set a new user record: The streaming portal around Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Co. now gathers more than 50 million subscribers – like TheVerge reported. In five months, Disney did what Netflix took three years to do (based on the international launch of the streaming offering).
User numbers: Netflix remains top dog, Disney + catches up, Apple TV + stumbles
For comparison: Netflix currently has 160 million users; Hulu, which is purely focused on the US market and also belongs to the Disney group, has a user base of 30 million.
Amazon Prime Video use theoretically 150 million people, but this includes all owners of an Amazon Prime account who can use Prime Video free of charge.

Is Disney + worth it alone for The Mandalorian?
That started like Disney + in November 2019 Apple TV + however, meanwhile stumbled: reported analysts aloud Variety a user base of around 33 million viewers in the United States in February 2020 (Disney Plus had around 20 million users in the United States at the time).
Most of these viewers don't pay for their subscription, but take advantage of the free one-year trial period they received when they purchased certain Apple hardware. Judging by the fact that Apple sells several hundred million iPhones each year, the number of users of Apple TV + is quite disappointing in comparison.
Disney +: Success thanks to low price and convincing series offer?
So while Apple TV + apparently has difficulties in retaining its users, Netflix has to beware of the growing competition from Disney + and Hulu – after all, Hulu is also due to launch internationally in the near future.
But what are the reasons for Disney +’s meteoric rise? The streaming service of the Mickey Mouse group has a few advantages over the streaming competition:
- strong brands like Marvel and Star Wars, which already have a large, worldwide fan base
- Content as an on-demand stream, some of which are exclusively available from Disney +
- a favorable price of 6.99 euros
- an extensive range for families with children, which can attract various new viewers, especially during the Corona crisis (for example with titles like Frozen 2)

Movies previously land on Disney +
Disney will also use the corona crisis to continue diverse Content planned for the cinema publish earlier on their own streaming platform. This strategy could ensure long-term customer loyalty.
The target group potential of Disney + will remain a decisive role for the competition in the streaming market: This is ultimately about the question of how many users Disney + alone with brands like Marvel and Star Wars can inspire. Only the future will show that.
