All discussions about the hardware specifications of the Xbox Series X took place a week after the E3 2020 cancellation, which undermined Microsoft's opportunity to show off its new console to fans in Los Angeles. It has since decided that it will host an online event to discuss the X-Series and xCloud projects this week.
Although we haven't confirmed many products of the Xbox Series X, the Digital Foundry report highlights Forza 7, Gears 5, and Minecraft running on the new Xbox as part of its broad commitment to backward compatibility. Players who bought certain games on the Xbox One X this year can also upgrade to the Xbox Series X for free, and CD Projekt recently confirmed that the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 will take advantage of this feature.
Microsoft's online event this week is also expected to talk about the "audio ray tracing" of Series X discussed by Jason Ronald, director of program management for the Xbox X, in a recent podcast.
As we work with numbers and stat istics, here is a bulleted list of features that Microsoft claims highlights the innovative features of the Xbox Series X:
- HDMI 2.1 support
- 120Hz support
- Variable refresh rate (VRR)
- Dynamic Delay Input (DLI)
- Direct storage
- NVMe SSD rate decompression
- Opus and Vorbis audio decoding
- Convolution / FFT hardware offload
- Sampler Feedback Stream (SFS)
- Hardware accelerated DirectX ray tracing (DXR)
- Variable Rate Shadow (VRS)
- Mesh shader
- GPU work creation
- 8K capability
- Machine learning acceleration
