In one Communiqu Signed by Phil Harrison, Vice President and General Manager, we learn this Monday, February 1, 2021 that Google will close the two internal studios Stadia Games and Entertainment under the direction of Jade Raymond. The Quebecois resign from their posts.

As reported Kotakuwho heard about the announcement a few days ago, 150 jobs are affected. Google will try to find new roles for them in the company. All efforts will now be focused on the Stadia platform, which will nevertheless continue to work with third-party developers and publishers to expand their catalog.

Here is the full message:

We launched Stadia with the goal of getting your favorite games instantly where you want to play them. With the recent successful launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in Stadia, gameplay across all types of devices including iOS, the development of our YouTube integration suite, and our global expansions, it is clear that Stadia’s technology has proven itself and works on a large scale . Broadcasting games on any screen is the future of this industry. We will continue to invest in Stadia and its underlying platform to deliver the best cloud gaming experience to our partners and the gaming community. This has been Stadia’s vision from the start.

In 2021, we’re stepping up our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players. We see an important opportunity to work with partners to find a gaming solution that is based on Stadia’s technical infrastructure and advanced platform tools. We believe this is the best way to make Stadia a long-term sustainable company that will help the industry grow.

Building great games from scratch takes many years and significant investments, and the cost is growing exponentially. Given our willingness to leverage Stadia’s proven technology and deepen our business partnerships, we have decided not to invest further in providing exclusive content beyond games to our in-house SG&E development team. With the focus on using our technology platform for industrial partners, Jade Raymond decided to leave Google to take advantage of other opportunities. We very much appreciate Jade Stadia’s contribution and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. Most of the SG&E team will take on new roles over the next few months. We are working closely with this talented team to find and support new roles.

What does it mean if you are a current or future Stadia player? You can still play all of your games on Stadia and Stadia Pro, and we will continue to bring new third-party titles to the platform. We are determined to drive the future of cloud gaming and we will continue to do our part to further develop this industry. Our focus continues to be on creating the best possible platform for players and technology for our partners and bringing those experiences to life for people around the world.

Will the technology allow Stadia to attract and retain players? Nothing is less certain.
