In just a few days Returnal will hit stores, becoming one of the exclusive PS5 games along with titles such as the remake of Demon’s Souls. However, apparently this is only the beginning if we heed the words of Jim Ryan, president of PlayStation, in an interview he gave to the portal Nikkei to talk about everything that lies ahead of your console for the future.
As stated, during this new generation there is great competitiveness, so a good way to make a difference is with exclusive video games, which has led him to affirm the following:
We’ve been quietly, but steadily, investing in high-quality PlayStation games. We will make sure that the PS5 generation has more exclusive video games than the previous ones. We have done mergers and acquisitions at other times in the past, such as with Insomniac Games. We will not rule out that option in the future.
Without a doubt the latter leaves the door open for the company to sign more studies so that they are part of PlayStation Studios, among which are already Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Sony Santa Monica, Media Molecule or also Guerrilla Games. He also feels very hopeful for the years to come, stating that he sees a very long life cycle on PS5.
In the same interview there was also time to talk about the agreement reached by Microsoft and Sony a couple of years ago in relation to share ideas and resources about cloud gaming, which has led Ryan to indicate that the conversations are still underway waiting to find the best moment to announce what his strategy will be:
The brainstorming conversation with Microsoft continues. This is extremely interesting and I look forward to announcing our cloud strategy when the time is right. While we could use the cloud for our technical infrastructure, the cloud gaming experience we offer will be exclusive to PlayStation.
Finally, during the interview there was also time to talk about how difficult it is to find PS5 units in all markets, although Jim Ryan has indicated that it is mainly due to the current state in which the world is due to the coronavirus.
There are several reasons why PS5 is difficult to obtain these days. The supply was limited by the coronavirus and the distribution was only online. Semiconductors and demand is also very tight around the world. We are asking our manufacturers to increase production and that will make it run smoother in 2021.
The current supply of PS5 in Japan is comparable to that of PS4 in the same period of time. We will continue to focus on the Japanese market and improve supplies in the future.
PS5 has a large number of video games by Japanese developers. In the future I would like to strengthen our ties with them and release more content on PlayStation 5 that is suitable for the Japanese market.
