The Windows 10 operating system currently has a security issue that cannot be ignored. Microsoft warns of two security vulnerabilities in font management Adobe Type Manager. This allows an attacker to remotely install malware and take control of someone else's computer in the worst case. There are currently no patches to close these vulnerabilities.

The vulnerability affects all versions of Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2019. Because no patches are currently available, Microsoft recommends a workaround. Below we explain how to protect ourselves from dangerous vulnerabilities.

Disable preview and details view in Windows Explorer

Open Explorer and click View in the horizontal menu bar. Deactivate the Preview Window option and the Details view on the right, then select another view. Next, click Options under View and select the View tab. Display the icon instead of the thumbnail, and click Apply.

Disable WebClient service

Click the start symbol, enter "Service" and open it. Now scroll to the "Web Client" entry. Double-click to open the service and select Disabled under Start Type. Confirm the changes by clicking Apply.

Rename Adobe Type Manager library

To be able to rename the affected libraries, you should use a command prompt. Click "Start" and enter "CMD". Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. If you are using a 32-bit system, use the following commands in turn, then press Enter to confirm each command:

cd "% windir% system32"

takeown.exe / f atmfd.dll

icacls.exe atmfd.dll / save atmfd.dll.acl

icacls.exe atmfd.dll / granted to the administrator: (F)

Rename atmfd.dll x-atmfd.dll

Users on 64-bit systems use the following command at a command prompt:

cd "% windir% system32"

takeown.exe / f atmfd.dll

icacls.exe atmfd.dll / save atmfd.dll.acl

icacls.exe atmfd.dll / granted to the administrator: (F)

Rename atmfd.dll x-atmfd.dll

cd "% windir% syswow64"

takeown.exe / f atmfd.dll

icacls.exe atmfd.dll / save atmfd.dll.acl

icacls.exe atmfd.dll / granted to the administrator: (F)

Rename atmfd.dll x-atmfd.dll

then restart your computer. Your computer is now protected from vulnerabilities. It is likely that Microsoft will also provide a corresponding update in the short term to eliminate this vulnerability.
