YouTube's "Make for Kids" restriction takes effect today, and it will affect all channels and those who create videos.
YouTube Following concerns from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a series of changes were announced in September to better protect children and their privacy.
These changes now require all YouTube creators to designate content as "Made for Children" in YouTube Studio. This change also makes it possible for anyone watching a video designated for children to be "considered to be children, regardless of the user's age."
Starting today, the service will no longer serve personalized ads or support "comments, stories, live chat, notification ringtones" and other options on videos designated for children.
"We know that these changes could have a significant impact on the creators of children's content, so YouTube is committed to helping them navigate this new landscape." "We continue to participate in this issue, including participating in the FTC's open comment period.
"We know that many creators have also provided valuable feedback."
Creators now need to set their channel or video to "Made for Kids." Doing so will determine how to handle content on the video service.
Proposals for changes were first made in June to make safe services accessible to minors at higher risk of exploitation. At the time, this made minors no longer allowed to broadcast live unless accompanied by an adult. It also started disabling comments on videos of minors, which is "an important step in keeping young people safe."
