I recently had the opportunity to test various devices from OWC, a brand specializing in storage products such as SSDs, Hard Drives and Docks, among others.
Pricing and availability
The Envoy Pro FX SSD can be purchased from the official OWC website. According to the capacity you choose, it will have a different price. The model we tested in this article weighs 1TB and costs $ 293.16. You can also choose to buy the same model with 240GB, 480GB, or 2TB.
In fact, its Thunderbolt Dock model made it to our list of the best USB-C docks and hubs for Mac on our sister website Macworld.es.
In this case, I had the opportunity to test its Envoy Pro FX SDD with a capacity of 1 TB which especially caught my attention for its excellent speed, 2800 MB / s and its very practical and easy to carry design.
Read on to find out whether OWC SSD is worth it or not.
Quality design and construction
The design of this SSD has many points in its favor, starting with the small size which will make it very easy to transport from place to place if needed.
The aluminum housing in a metallic gray finish adds an elegant touch with its rounded edges and beveled edges slightly angled inward. The device has two non-slip strips at its base that will secure the SSD to any surface.
It should be noted that it is splash resistant with MIL-STD810G military certification. This means that the device meets the US military standard that they use to review any device that they will use in the military.
As you can imagine, this is a standard that guarantees that this device is going to be able to last and withstand various rather extreme conditions. So you can rest easy, the Envy Pro FX SSD is built to last.
There is no fan installed, so you can expect the SSD to be completely silent, it won’t bother you at all while working.
On one side there is an LED light which will confirm that the SSD is properly connected. And on the opposite side you’ll find the USB-C connection. A USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) cable is included in the purchase box.
Performance and connectivity
The Envoy Pro FX SSD has one of the fastest read and write speeds we’ve ever seen from an SSD, 2800MB per second. Powered by M.2 NVMe 1.3. I was able to transfer 30GB files in under 12 seconds so you can get an idea of how fast this SSD is.
OWC uses TRIM media storage technology thanks to which it guarantees fast and above all reliable performance. We remember that a TRIM command is one that allows the device to perform a cleanup when not in use so that there is a new location to write to.
It is also capable of operating via USB-C and USB-A, on PC and Mac with Thunderbolt 4 and USB-4. It’s also compatible with iPad Pro, Chromebook, and Surface, making it a very versatile device.
You can use this SSD as follows:
- Storage of photos, videos and documents
- Backups via Time Machine or File History
- Secondary / portable operating system boot drive
- Project unit on set to edit daily videos
- Mounting the camera from different angles
- Editing images in Affinity Photo and Adobe Photoshop
- Using large sample libraries in audio projects
- A library of portable Steam games
And finally, the Envoy Pro FX SSD comes with a three-year warranty, a fact that adds points in its favor.
It is very expensive, but it is also very fast and above all reliable. Betting on the OWC brand is betting on quality and reliability, so if you can afford it, it’s a good option to buy.
However, if you are on a budget, you can find much cheaper options and even more capacity. You can check out our guide with the best SSDs available.
