Back in February, Polygon made some of the best recent movies in streaming settings. If you enjoyed some spooks, that's a great place to start. But if you're looking specifically for Hulu in shock, we've got you covered there too. Whether you're in the mood for a dull, contemplative time or a schlocky splatter-fest, the streaming service has many options. Below, we recommend our top 10 favorites.
After 28 days
Written by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Extermination) and directed by Danny Boyle (Traveling by train, Slumdog Millionaire), After 28 days it reinvigorated the zombie-apocalypse genre of the new millennium. Bike envoy Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a vacation to find London abandoned, and is immediately attacked by people who are infected with a raging virus. Jim eventually came in contact with other survivors, who were trying to flee London after learning of a place they could be in a few hours before. If that sounds familiar, it's very similar to opening Walking Dead (though composer Robert Kirkman it promises to happen by accident).
Extermination
After After 28 days, Alex Garland has established himself as a king of trippy sci-fi, with his 2018 film Extermination it's his time to move on. Based on the first novel in Jeff VanDerMeer & # 39; s Southern Reach Trilogy, Extermination stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson as a team of science researchers exploring a forest that has been taken over by an unknown place like Shimmer. Animal and plant life has evolved within the Shimmer – plants grow into human silhouettes, the bear screams at the voice of a lost group of colleagues – but that's almost as scary as the psychological effects of scientists themselves.
Cupboard in the Forest
There is something for everyone in Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's loving send of the "wooden cabin" type, which includes everything from Dead Evil
The teenagers are directed to the kitchen, where they explore a myriad of slasher movies: they all explore the basement that stands still, this hot young man skips sex in the bush, a stone-throwing child teasing a philosophical beast. Eventually they were attacked by the “Zombie Redneck Torture Family” unaware that their death was a sign of a mysterious evil power.
And if that's not enough for you, there are stars– Thor Chris Hemsworth as a gold-hearted jacket.

The automated journey is a wonderful surprise for Neil Marshall & # 39; s horror adventure of 2005. (In time Marshall will continue to direct some of the best Game of Thrones episodes: "Dark Water" and "The Watchmen on the Wall.") When a group of friends went down to an unsupervised cave system, they discovered that the underground porch was actually a place for scary animals. It is enough to get rid of anyone from spelunking good, as claustrophobic decreases by passing through rocks that are almost smaller than scars that tear human flesh.
I caught the devil
When Matt and his wife Karen arrived at the house of his brother Steve who was on a sudden Christmas visit, he was shocked and surprised to learn that Steve had a locked man in his basement. More worrisome: Steve claims that the man is a real Devil. While Matt and Karen try to figure out what to do, Steve is first spotted by his wife and his dead daughter perpetuating his pain. I caught the devil
Sadness
Stephen King's story about the author, his great lover, and … abusive the process of giving back, only grown in sync as social media as creators connected directly to their audience. Now that we're in the boom King movie sync (and why Red Rock season 2 picks up right from the source material), we've never had a better time watching Rob Reiner's adaptation Sadness. Kathy Bates stars as nurse deranged Annie Wilkes, and it may just be the biggest King-related job she's ever committed to screening. —Pat Patches
Mom and Dad
Nicolas Cage is perfectly suited for weird indie horror (see also: Mandy, Color the space,) with his almost supernatural abilities to transform his face and voice into unusual new situations. Like a shy father circumcising his children after an enraged virus transforms parents into diminishing their offspring, he is unhealthy. Selma Blair is more than holding her own as his equally murderous wife. The result is a joke-black humor that is as sweet as blood.
Dissociated Function 3
Paranormal Function is a rare franchise for development with each installment of the trilogy. The original was only shot for $ 15,000. Third, led by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish) is a well-made ghost story made to bend the found beauty of gimmicks. It's also the first thing: 27 years before the events of the first movie, young Katie grows up with her mother, sister and her mother's boyfriend. The Amblin-esque setup opens the doors to new entrances and new myths – the unexpected twist of the series built on do-you-hear-that jump scares. More movies need demonic! —PP
The lungs
OK, okay, Bong Joon-ho's satire masterpiece is not a horror movie in the strictest sense, but it has enough image and light. Also, what is more shocking than the capitalist positions? If you've never seen a winner of the Best Photo Oscar competition, if you don't know what's going to get better, then we won't miss anything here. And if you've already seen it The lungs
Cool Location
Cool Location introduces one of the simplest and most effective horror ideas: a world where making one sound can get you killed. As if that time wasn't already enough, consider trying to bring a newborn when a small cry would mean their death. Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and Lee (John Krasinski, who also directed) do their best to save their entire family, and this movie is often played as a film of their lives, which takes place behind an apocalyptic setting.
From time to time, scenes are almost shocking, melting lights roaming the cornfields giving the impression of an Instagram-designed wedding venue. But this shows an emphasis on the oppression that exists. The end of the war in this film is a more recent design of monster design, which I can forgive because Cool Location it's not about monsters. It's about how the monsters have changed the world and turned each moment into a struggle for the missing error. If you still need to be sure, check out this piece on a foundation related to this concept. –Jenna Stoeber
Us
Wilson's peaceful family vacation ends unruly when a violent doppelganger's family emerges from its vicinity and insists that it can be "caught." The leader of the group is familiar with Adelaide (Lupita Nyongwayo) – she and Reed had a wonderful meeting as children, and now Redward is back to redeem himself and his fellow bandmates.
Us it evokes a basic spooky idea and tosses it into something much bigger and more scary. The slow and steady build doesn't stop the tension from falling – it only allows you to hold your breath for a while before heading back. Discard them until the 70s removes the root of this story in the genre's long history, and even with its iconic image – the white Rabbit, the bright golden scissors – it stands out as completely unique. The entire organization performs both its roles indiscriminately, but Lupita Nyongindile looks ugly as a leading figure and opponent. This time we follow Come out proves that Jordan Peele is not a flash in the pan, but a director of great ability, capable of depressing the mind without losing the perfect story. –J.S.
