We knew that making a game is no easy task, but we could never imagine that Game developers’ headaches are caused by doors. An element that seems really simple to us and which becomes a real headache in video games for developers.
Stephan Hövelbrinks, one of the developers of Death Trash, spoke on his Twitter account about the difficulty of a door in a game, going viral and getting more developers talking. Hövelbrinks said the doors are tricky because they cause all kinds of bugs in the game.
The problem is, the AI has to recognize that there is a gate and have enough logic to control how to interact with the gate, and while that sounds pretty much very simple, it isn’t. In fact, the game designer Liz England, who worked on titles like Watch Dogs Legion or Sunset Overdrive, had already mentioned this difficulty which she called “The door problem”.
Faced with all the errors that a door produces, many developers have chosen to eliminate them
Sometimes it’s so hard to put in a door many games have chosen to delete them, or put very little as is the case with Assassin’s Creed. Others, however, have added doors in their games, but many developers claim that the issues caused by them took longer than building any abilities or weapons in the game.
This tweet was joined by numerous complaints from other developers, even Damion Schubert created a thread mentioning all the challenges of opening a door. But it wasn’t the only one, The Last of Us 2 co-director mentioned that the doors are a big nightmare
After experiencing this reality after development and uncovering one of the best-kept secrets on doors, the truth is, we’ll never be able to walk through a door in a game the same way, and after seeing so many complaints, let’s hope. that little by little, they will be able to put in place systems that facilitate this task.
